Meatball Subs

Baked sub rolls filled with your favorite meatballs (like the Meatballs recipe on this site), topped with a parmesan and mozzarella mix, then broiled until the cheese is bubbly. A technique for keeping the bread from getting soggy and preventing the cheese from burning.

main italian

Ingredients

  • Meatballs (from your favorite slow-cooked Italian meatballs recipe)
  • Sub rolls
  • Garlic butter
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Mozzarella cheese
  • Marinara sauce
  • Olive oil (for brushing)

Steps

  1. Prepare meatballs using your favorite slow-cooked Italian meatballs recipe (about 4 hours cooking time works well).
  2. Cut the top off each sub roll and spread the cut surface with garlic butter.
  3. Bake the rolls at 350°F for 5–10 minutes until lightly toasted.
  4. Spread a parmesan and mozzarella cheese mix on the bottom of each bun to prevent the sauce from soaking the bread.
  5. Fill with the cooked meatballs and marinara sauce.
  6. Top with more of the parmesan and mozzarella cheese mix.
  7. Broil until the cheese is bubbly.
  8. Brush oil on top of the bread as needed to prevent burning during broiling.
